"The grandeur of the construction project is truly awe-inspiring, a result of the governor's decisions and the workers' hard work. It's a major tourist attraction in Las Vegas."

Before You Book
Which Hoover Dam Tour to Book
On top, inside, or on the way to the Grand Canyon, and when driving yourself is the better deal.
Hoover Dam is about 35 miles southeast of the Las Vegas Strip, roughly 45 minutes by road, which makes it the shortest of the big day trips from the city. Most tours from Las Vegas run five to six hours with hotel pickup. What separates them is how far into the dam they take you.
On top, inside, or a photo stop
The Bureau of Reclamation, which runs the dam, sells three levels of visit. The Visitor Center is $15. The Guided Power Plant Tour is $25 for adults ($15 for ages 4 to 16) and goes through the original construction tunnels to a viewing platform over a 30-foot penstock and the generators in the Nevada powerhouse. The Guided Dam Tour is $40 and adds the inspection tunnels inside the dam and the original elevator. (Bureau of Reclamation prices, checked in October 2026.)
Tours from Las Vegas package one of these levels with the drive. Read the inclusions to see which:

The tour on this page, run by USA West Tour, is the thorough half day: Lakeview Overlook, a guided walk across the top, the Power Plant Tour down to the generator room, and the Mike O’Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge for the view down onto the dam, with entrance fees included. Comedy on Deck’s Ultimate VIP Tour also includes the power plant and adds lunch for $59, in a bigger group on a bus.
If you only want to stand on the dam, Mr Las Vegas Tours’ 3-Hour VIP Mini Tour ($70, 4.8 from 931 reviews) is the short version, entry ticket included. The Grand Canyon West days are a different trip: the dam is a photo stop on the way, so book them for the canyon, not the dam.
When to drive yourself instead
With a car, the dam is an easy half day and the tickets at the dam cost less than any tour: $25 for the Power Plant Tour or $40 for the Guided Dam Tour, plus parking in the garage on the Nevada side. A tour makes sense if you don’t have a car, want the walk and the bridge explained, or would rather not plan the timing and the parking.
Hoover Dam with Valley of Fire
They are on opposite sides of Lake Mead, so most people do them on separate days. Valley of Fire is about an hour northeast of the Strip, and the Valley of Fire or Red Rock comparison helps if you only have time for one red-rock park.

Hoover Dam Tours: Questions Before You Book
Answers checked in October 2026.
Drive about 35 miles southeast, roughly 45 minutes, and buy tickets at the dam, or book a tour with hotel pickup. Half-day tours such as the Tunnels and Power Plant Tour ($119) take about five and a half hours and include the dam's entrance fees (October 2026).
At the dam, the Bureau of Reclamation charges $15 for the Visitor Center, $25 for the Guided Power Plant Tour (ages 4 to 16: $15) and $40 for the Guided Dam Tour. Tours from Las Vegas with transport start at $59 for the Ultimate VIP Tour with Lunch (October 2026).
Those that include the Power Plant Tour: the Tunnels and Power Plant Tour and the Ultimate VIP Tour list it, with the generator room. Shorter tours walk on top only, and Grand Canyon day trips usually stop for photos.
Three hours for a short run on top, such as the 3-Hour VIP Mini Tour, and five to six hours when the Power Plant Tour is included. A Grand Canyon West day with a dam stop takes about ten hours.
If you don't have a car, yes: the dam is close, and a half day covers the walk on top, the inside tour and the bridge without planning. With a car, buying the $25 Power Plant Tour at the dam yourself is cheaper.
Yes. The road across the top is open to visitors on foot, and most tours include a guided walk there. The view down onto the dam is from the Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, which some tours, such as the Tunnels and Power Plant Tour, also stop at.
Yes, as a stop. Grand Canyon West tours such as Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam & Skywalk Option ($99) include a Hoover Dam photo stop on the way, not the inside tours.
Yes. The 90-Minute Midday Sightseeing Cruise on Lake Mead ($55) leaves from near Boulder City. The Lake Mead park fee and transport from the Strip are extra.
Yes. MaxTour's Hoover Dam and Seven Magic Mountains Tour ($80, 4.9 from 180 reviews) adds the painted-boulder art installation south of the city to a guided walk on top of the dam.
It is possible by car but rushed: they sit on opposite sides of Lake Mead. Most visitors give each a half day or a day. See Valley of Fire tours from Las Vegas for that trip.
