The closure that shapes everything

From May 15 to September 30, every year, the park closes its marquee trails - Fire Wave, the Seven Wonders loop, Pastel and Pink Canyon, Pinnacles, White Domes. Not advisories: closures, made after years of rescues and deaths on trails that offer no shade and reflect heat like an oven floor. Rangers lead occasional guided dawn exceptions; the general rule stands. A summer visit is therefore a drive-and-viewpoint visit - which, at this park, is still a spectacular thing to be.

Our verdict strip, explained

The homepage banner pulls the hourly forecast for the park gate and calls the day one of three things. PRIME (high under 32°C / 90°F): full hiking weather - which effectively means October through April. HOT (32-40°C): mornings only, more water than feels reasonable, done by eleven. BAKING (40°C+): windshield-and-pullout weather, dawn or evening, no exceptions worth your life. For calibration honesty: over the 30 days before we shipped this page, the daily high at the park averaged in the low 40s and touched 46°C - in high summer, BAKING is the normal state, not the warning.

What summer still delivers

Mouse’s Tank Road at 6am with the rock going ember-red; the Beehives and Elephant Rock steps from the car; petroglyphs at Atlatl Rock (a staircase, not a hike); bighorn sheep active in the early cool.
