White Domes: The Park's Best Short Loop
A 1.1-mile loop with a slot canyon, two-tone domes and the remains of a 1960s film set - open October to mid-May, closed for heat all summer.
At the very end of Mouse’s Tank Road - the park’s greatest drive - the White Domes loop packs more variety per step than anywhere else in Valley of Fire: cream-and-red banded domes, a descent through boulders, the stone footings of a movie set, and a genuine slot canyon you walk straight through.
The loop
About 1.1 miles, walked counterclockwise: a sandy descent off the domes, past the set remains left from The Professionals, the 1966 Lee Marvin western that built a hacienda out here, then into the slot - narrow, cool even in warm months, over in a hundred meters and worth the trip alone. One short scramble-ish step at the descent; otherwise family-grade in the open season. Like every marquee trail here it closes May 15 to September 30 (the summer rules); October through April it’s the walk we’d hand any first-timer.
The movie thing, since you’ll ask
The park has been playing Mars and alien worlds for decades - Star Trek Generations filmed Captain Kirk’s death at Silica Dome, Total Recall borrowed the redscapes, and the Transformers franchise shot here too. The set ruins on this loop are the one place the film history is literally underfoot.
Two minutes down the road, the Fire Wave completes the pairing; the full-day tour threads both ends of Mouse’s Tank Road with the water and driving handled.
